Popcorn Appetizer Recipes - New Ideas For Popcorn

!±8± Popcorn Appetizer Recipes - New Ideas For Popcorn

Popcorn can be served as it is, if you are looking for ideas for quick easy appetizers. It can also be used as an ingredient to make other appetizer recipes. You can combine popcorn with sweet ingredients like honey, sugar, caramel, chocolate chips and marshmallows, or with savory ones like chili powder, cheese, and herbs. Popcorn is great if you are having a cocktail party or if you just want to serve some easy party appetizers rather than a full-blown meal.

You can either pop your own corn kernels or buy ready-popped corn. Obviously if you make your own it will taste fresher and better but bear in mind that one cup of popcorn kernels will give you sixteen cups of popped corn, so do not make too much! Popcorn is one of the most popular holiday appetizers and almost everybody loves it.

Rocky Road Popcorn

Melt three cups of mini marshmallows with a quarter of a cup of butter in a pot over a moderately low heat, stirring the mixture often. Cook it for five minutes, and then take it off the heat. Stir in eight cups of popped popcorn, half a cup of unsalted, dry roasted peanuts and half a cup of chocolate chips.

Shape the mixture into two inch balls and wrap each one in plastic. When you serve these at your next party or buffet, they are sure to disappear at lightning speed! This recipe appeals to kids and adults.

Savory Popcorn Recipes

For an Indian style popcorn recipe, fill a heavy nine inch skillet containing a tablespoon of corn oil with quarter of a cup of corn kernels. Heat the oil until a kernel pops, then shake the skillet and cover it with a lid. Turn the heat down when more kernels pop, shaking the pan a few times.

Transfer the popped corn to a big bowl and add quarter of a teaspoon of salt. Melt two tablespoons of butter with half a teaspoon of chili powder, then pour this over the corn and mix it with your hands. This delicious savory popcorn recipe is nice served warm.

Another spicy popcorn recipe can be made by melting three tablespoons of butter in a heavy pot and stirring in half a teaspoon each of garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt and dried thyme. Cook this for one minute, then pour it over twelve cups of popped corn and toss well. Serve this tasty appetizer recipe hot or warm.

If you have some dried beef, you can cook two and a half ounces of chopped dried beef in half a cup of butter for three minutes, then pour this mixture over three quarts of unsalted popped popcorn. Toss it well and serve hot for a rich, beefy treat.

Betty's Caramelized Cashews

In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make Caramelized Cashews. These are similar to peanut brittle. They may be served as a sweet/salty snack or as an addition to many recipes. Ingredients: 1 cup white sugar 1 cup roasted, salted cashew halves Prepare a baking pan or tray to receive the Caramelized Cashews by lining it with waxed paper or aluminum foil. Use nonstick aluminum foil, if you have it available. In a deep, nonstick skillet, pour 1 cup white sugar. Heat the sugar over low to medium heat, swirling or stirring the pan continuously. The sugar will begin to melt, and some lumps will form. Press out the lumps with a wooden spoon and continue to cook, until all sugar is melted and golden brown. Immediately add 1 cup roasted, salted cashew halves. Turn off heat and stir quickly, coating the cashews with the caramelized sugar. Working quickly, spread the Caramelized Cashews on the prepared pan until about ½-inch thick. Let cool. When cool, break Caramelized Cashews into desired shapes and sizes. Serve in a nice candy dish for a delicious sweet/salty snack. Enjoy! --Betty 

Foods That Will Make Your Underactive Thyroid Symptoms Worse

!±8± Foods That Will Make Your Underactive Thyroid Symptoms Worse

Are you suffering from underactive thyroid symptoms? If so, there are certain foods that you should do your best to avoid because they can actually make your condition worse. Here is a list of the top 10 foods to avoid if you have any underactive thyroid symptoms.

1. White breads - This food makes it hard for the body to regulate insulin and also disrupts hormonal balance within the body.

2. Caffeine - We all love caffeine, most of us have it on a daily basis in coffee or sodas. However, caffeine depresses thyroid function and will only make your underactive thyroid symptoms worse. Even though caffeine is a stimulant, it is no good for stimulating your thyroid.

3. Broccoli - We all assume that we should be eating our vegetables, but this is one you will want to stay away from. This is because broccoli is considered a goitrogenic food. That means that consuming too much broccoli can increase the likelihood that you'll develop a goiter somewhere on your body.

This would be due to decreased thyroid hormone production. In addition, the entire family of goitrogenic foods can nullify the effects of some thyroid medicines, so keep this in mind.

4. Peaches - also considered a goitrogenic food, be sure to add this food to the list of ones that can possibly cause a goiter to form due to your thyroid's hormone production being decreased.

5. Peanuts - yes, they are salty, crunchy and delicious, but they aren't the best snack choice for someone with an underactive thyroid symptom, as they interfere with the production of thyroid hormones.

6. Fluoride - this is found in toothpaste and drinking water that comes from the tap. Fluoride essentially blocks iodine receptors in the thyroid gland which causes reduced iodine-containing hormone production.

7. Chlorine - not only for pools, it is found in pretty much everyone's drinking water that comes directly from the tap. Chlorine and iodine are chemically related.

Like fluoride, chlorine also blocks iodine receptors in the thyroid gland, causing reduced iodine-containing hormone production. So, drink plenty of distilled or purified water for essential and proper bodily functions, just not from the tap.

8. Soy - soybeans are off limits, as they have an anti-nutrient that contains a chemical that reacts with iodine. Since iodine is critical to make the thyroid hormone, this food should be avoided if you have an underactive thyroid symptom. Soymilk, soy flour, and tofu are also foods to add to the do not eat list.

9. Garlic - it may keep people away and it's great in spaghetti sauce. However, garlic also reduces iodine uptake in the body.

10. White flour - in the same family as white breads, this is a food that can, for some people, contribute to difficulties with insulin resistance and hormonal problems. White flour is a refined and over-processed food and has very little, if any, nutritional value at all.

Any underactive thyroid symptoms can be controlled by eating lightly, but regularly throughout the day. Eat about every four hours to keep the metabolism moving and your body's functions working properly. Taking an herbal thyroid remedy can really help as well.
